How to Pool Money for a Friend's Birthday Gift

October 3, 2026 4 min read

Five friends each buying a small gift usually means five things nobody needed. Pooling the same money into one gift they actually want is better for everyone, and it is easy to organize when the group agrees on a few things first.

1. Start From What They Want

The best group gift is something your friend already asked for. If they keep a wishlist, pick from it. If they do not, ask them to make one, or quietly ask a mutual friend what they have been eyeing. Headphones, a backpack, a smart watch and gaming accessories are common choices for students.

2. Agree on a Budget Early

Decide the target amount before anyone starts collecting. Keep it comfortable for the person with the tightest budget, and let people give more if they want to. Nobody should feel pressured.

3. Pick One Person to Start the Pool

On GishFy, any friend can pick an item from the birthday person's wishlist and start a group gift for it, setting a target amount. You do not need to be the wishlist owner. Everyone else then adds what they are chipping in, and the pool shows how close the group is to the goal.

4. Be Clear About How the Money Moves

GishFy tracks who has pledged what. It does not collect or move money. The group arranges payment among themselves outside the app, usually by sending the amount to whoever is buying the gift. Decide who that is before you start so nobody has to chase anyone later.

5. Share It in the Group Chat

Copy the pool's link and drop it in your class or hostel group chat. A short message works best: what the gift is, the target, and who is buying it.

When It Does Not Work

If the item is cheap enough for one person to give, a pool is extra work. Group gifting pays off for the bigger items that no single student would buy for a friend alone.
