What National Day gifting looks like in the UAE

National Day was renamed Eid Al Etihad, the "Union Day", in 2023. 2026 marks 55 years since the union. It comes straight after Commemoration Day on 30 November, and most people get a long weekend, which makes it a natural time for family gatherings, trips to Hatta or the desert, and small gifts.

Much of the gifting happens at work. Companies give employees and clients branded hampers, date boxes or vouchers, and teams often collect money for something nicer for a manager or a colleague. Schools hold celebrations where children bring treats or small gifts in the national colors. At home, it's common to give something that celebrates the country: local dates, Emirati coffee, a good oud, or a book or print about the UAE.

The trouble is coordination. When ten colleagues all want to contribute, or three relatives are buying for the same child, it's easy to end up with four boxes of the same dates. A shared list fixes that. Everyone can see what's been chosen, mark what they're buying, and pool money for a bigger gift.

National Day also falls a few days after White Friday, so it's a good time to buy gifts at sale prices. Put your ideas on a list in November, wait for the deals, then share it with whoever is helping.

Tips for National Day gifting

Order before the long weekend

Delivery slots fill up in the last week of November, and many shops close or run short hours on 2 and 3 December. Aim to have gifts ordered by 25 November.

Shop the White Friday sales

White Friday and Yellow Friday fall just before National Day. Build your list in early November and buy when prices drop.

Pool money for office gifts

For a manager or a team gift, one person starts a group gift on the item and colleagues pledge what they'd like to put in. Everyone can see how close the target is, and you settle up between yourselves.

Use the national colors thoughtfully

Red, green, white and black packaging or ribbons look great. Treat the flag itself with respect, and avoid printing it on items that will be thrown away or stepped on.

Mind your audience

UAE offices are very international. Choose gifts anyone can enjoy, such as dates, sweets, plants or experiences, and check that food gifts are halal and suitable for any allergies.

Frequently asked questions

Still unsure? These are the questions we hear most.

When is UAE National Day 2026?

UAE National Day, also called Eid Al Etihad, is on Wednesday 2 December 2026. It marks 55 years since the union of the emirates in 1971. Commemoration Day is on 30 November, and the official public holiday dates are announced by the government each year.

What is Eid Al Etihad?

Eid Al Etihad means "Union Day". It's the official name for UAE National Day since 2023, celebrating the day the emirates united to form the country.

What are good National Day gifts for employees?

Date and chocolate boxes, karak tea hampers, oud or bakhoor sets, plants and quality stationery all work well. They're local, easy to share and suit people from any background. Expect to spend around AED 75–200 per person.

Are gifts expected on UAE National Day?

Not in the way they are at Eid or Christmas, but they're increasingly common, especially at work and in schools. A small, thoughtful gift is always welcome.

How can a team collect money for a National Day gift?

Make a GishFy list with the gift on it and start a group gift on that item. Colleagues pledge what they'd like to contribute and can see the total grow. GishFy doesn't handle the money itself, so you settle up between yourselves.

Can I make a list in AED?

Yes. Set the list's currency to UAE dirham (AED) and add the price you see on Amazon.ae, Noon or in a local shop, so everyone knows what each gift costs.

Is GishFy free?

Yes. Making lists, adding gifts and sharing them is free.
